EE for EverybodEE Keynote Speakers

J. Drew Lanham                                                Nancy Striniste

The 2020 Conference Committee is excited for the two wonderful keynote speakers we have lined up for this year's conference.

Our Thursday night keynote speaker, Dr. Jr Drew Lanham, is an author, poet, wildlife biologist and Clemson University’s Alumni Distinguished Professor of Wildlife Ecology. Dr. Lanham is a widely published author and award-nominated poet, writing about his experiences as a birder, hunter and wild, wandering soul. In his teaching, research, and outreach roles, Dr. Lanham seeks to translate conservation science to make it relevant to others in ways that are evocative and understandable. As a Black American he is intrigued with how culture and ethnic prisms can bend perceptions of nature and its care. Echoed in his first solo-work, “The Home Place-Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature” was published in 2016. In 2019 he was awarded the National Audubon Society's Dan W. Lufkin Prize for Environmental Leadership, recognizing "individuals who have dedicated their entire lives to the environment".

Closing out our conference Friday VAEE Member Nancy Striniste will speak about her new book Nature Play at Home: Creating Outdoor Spaces that Connect Children to the Natural World (Timber Press, 2019). Nancy is founder and principal designer at EarlySpace, is a landscape designer, an educator, and an author. With a unique background in both children development and design, Nancy has been creating spaces for children for more than three decades. She began her career as an early childhood educator in the 80’s. Her creativity and innovation in her own classroom led to presentations for other teachers which led to her first design projects. She’s been creating spaces for children and teaching teachers about the potential of the physical environment ever since. Her designs have won awards from the Metropolitan Council of Governments, the Chesapeake Stormwater Network, the Maryland Recreation and Parks Association, and the Landscape Contractors Association of MD, DC and VA. . In addition to her design work and writing, Nancy teaches a class called “Landscape Analysis and Design for Nature Play and Learning” at Antioch University New England in their graduate program in Nature-based Early Childhood Education. Nancy is a certified Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional.  EarlySpace is a registered Virginia SWaM (Small Women and Minority Owned Business

We are thrilled to bring both Drew and Nancy to the 2020 Conference and can't wait to hear what they have to share with us!
